WHAT IS SURGICAL ONCOLOGY?
Surgical oncology is the branch of cancer treatment that uses surgery to diagnose, stage and treat cancer. A surgical oncologist may take a biopsy, remove a tumor and nearby lymph nodes, or relieve symptoms of advanced cancer. Many patients have surgery combined with other treatments, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy or hormone therapy, given by medical and radiation oncologists. These treatments may be given before surgery (neoadjuvant therapy) or after surgery (adjuvant therapy) to help prevent cancer growth, spread or recurrence.

YOUR CANCER TREATMENT PLAN
Your first visit includes a review of your scans, biopsy results and health history. Your surgeon explains the stage of your cancer and every treatment option. When surgery is part of the plan, we coordinate timing with chemotherapy or radiation, and we schedule your operation quickly. After surgery, we review the pathology results with you and stay part of your care team.
SURGERY FOR ADVANCED CANCER
For some patients with advanced cancer, surgery is used to relieve symptoms such as a blocked bowel, bleeding or pain, and to improve quality of life. Our surgeons use minimally invasive techniques whenever possible to shorten recovery so you can continue other cancer treatment sooner.
