WHAT IS GENERAL SURGERY?

During a five-year surgical residency, they learn abdominal and digestive surgery, including liver, gallbladder and colon surgery. They also train in endocrine surgery, surgical oncology, minimally invasive surgery, trauma and surgical critical care in the intensive care unit. Many surgeons then complete one or two extra years of fellowship in one of these surgical specialties. Our surgical care covers benign and cancerous conditions of the abdominal organs (gallbladder, liver, pancreas, spleen, adrenal glands), the digestive tract (esophagus, stomach, small intestine, appendix, colon, rectum, anus), the thyroid and parathyroid glands, skin and soft tissue (melanoma, cysts, lipomas), the breast, and hernias. Our surgeons use a minimally invasive approach for many of these procedures.
COMMON SURGICAL PROCEDURES WE PERFORM
Gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy), appendectomy, inguinal, umbilical and ventral hernia repair, hiatal hernia repair and anti-reflux surgery, colon and small bowel resection, thyroid and parathyroid surgery, breast biopsy and lumpectomy, and removal of cysts, lipomas and skin cancers. Our surgeons perform surgery with laparoscopic, robotic or traditional open techniques, depending on what is safest for you.

General surgeons see patients in the office for many elective conditions mentioned above, and we also cover Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville for all general surgery emergency conditions, typically involving the gastrointestinal tract and abdomen, as well as infections of the skin and soft tissue.
