    WHAT IS GENERAL SURGERY?

Surgeons historically operated on all regions of the body, and over time there has been increasing sub-specialization. During a five year surgical residency, general surgeons receive training in gastrointestinal and abdominal surgery which includes hepatobiliary surgery and colorectal surgery, as well as endocrine surgery, surgical oncology, minimally invasive surgery, trauma surgery, surgical critical care, vascular surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, transplant surgery and pediatric surgery. Training general surgeons also may do rotations with Neurosurgery, ENT, and Urology, and have exposure to these services. Frequently, surgeons will train another year or two in one of the above sub-disciplines of general surgery.

    WHY CHOOSE US?

North Florida Surgeons: Baptist Jacksonville Division evaluates and treats a full range of complex surgical problems involving all regions of the body. No matter what the need, our general surgeons collaborate with each other, other surgical specialists where needed, as well as your referring physicians, with the goal of giving each patient comprehensive, seamless care. When patients need us the most, we are there, available 365 days of the year!

    TYPES OF SURGERY WE OFFER

    WHAT DOES GENERAL SURGERY INCLUDE?

General Surgery services include treatment of benign and cancerous conditions of the abdominal organs (gallbladder, liver, pancreas, spleen, adrenal glands), the gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, stomach, small intestine, appendix, colon, rectum, anus), head and neck (thyroid and parathyroid), skin and soft tissue (melanoma, cysts, lipomas), and breast and hernia operations. Many of our general surgeons use a minimally invasive approach for certain procedures.

DO YOU ALSO PERFORM SMALLER OPERATIONS?

In addition to the complicated operations that we do, we are happy to evaluate and remove common skin lesions such as cysts or lipomas, what some people would call “lumps and bumps.”

DO YOU ALSO PERFORM EMERGENCY OPERATIONS?

General surgeons see patients in the office for many elective conditions mentioned above, and we also cover Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville for all general surgery emergency conditions, typically involving the gastrointestinal tract and abdomen, as well as infections of the skin and soft tissue. We are frequently called to evaluate abdominal pain, whether due to appendicitis, gallstones or acute cholecystitis, diverticulitis, gastroduodenal ulcer perforations, bowel obstructions, or otherwise.
