WHAT IS ENHANCED RECOVERY AFTER SURGERY?
ERAS is now the standard of care after surgery with our surgeons. What is ERAS? It is where your surgeons and anesthesiologists use evidence based care protocols to help you recover faster. ERAS is a philosophy where your surgeon is committed to a care plan that minimizes disruption to your body. Essentially we use multiple non-narcotic pain medications, often combined with minimally invasive surgical techniques, to minimize post-operative pain, so that minimal narcotics are needed. Narcotics (morphine, dilaudid, oxycodone, hydrocodone, etc.) often come with side effects such as sedation, nausea or vomiting, and constipation, all of which slow down your bodies recovery. By optimizing pain control and minimizing narcotics, patients are out of bed and walking almost immediately after surgery, and often eating on the day of surgery.
WHY CHOOSE US?
Together all of this allows a faster recovery and shorter hospital stay with less complications. We collaborate closely with your anesthesiologist, as well as nurses and hospital staff to individualize your care plan. While our surgeons all have excellent results, we are all committed to continually monitoring and improving our care!
HOW IS ERAS DIFFERENT?
BUILDING
STRENGTH
Leading up to surgery, patients are encouraged to eat a well-balanced diet, exercise, and even quit smoking, which can slow the healing process. Getting enough protein every day helps patients build strength and prepare their bodies for surgery.
SURGERY
PREP
In the past patients were told not take anything by mouth after midnight and they were often dehydrated and hungry all day until surgery. Now our patients can have clear liquids on the day of surgery up until 4 hours before their surgery time (or two hours before their arrival time at the hospital). Ensure Pre-Surgery drink is recommended, which should be available at CVS, Walmart, or through Amazon; but if this is not available, G2 Gatorade or Powerade Zero will work, even for diabetics. You still can not have any food or milk products on the day of surgery otherwise you will likely have to reschedule.
SURGERY
RECOVERY
Using non-narcotic pain medications and targeted anesthesia help ward off unwelcome post-surgery side effects, such as nausea, dizziness and constipation. And since IV fluids are kept to a minimum, swelling is reduced and patients are able to get up and move sooner after surgery
